Some friends of mine are considering setting up a new company around an e-commerce idea and asked me to research the cost of the IT infrastructure needed. As part of that, I went Web shopping for a low end server to get them started, and found some surprises. Note that all pricing data shown below is from the Apple, Sun, Dell, IBM, and Red Hat Web sites on January 26.

Why are you comparing the price of an OpenPower 720 to the Sun Fire 250?
The OpenPower 720 is a different class of machine that can go up to 4way and 64GB RAM.
You should compare the 250 to the OpenPower 710
http://www-1.ibm.com/servers/eserver/openpower/hardware/710_browse.html
which is $8,428.00
Not to mention the Power5 processor murders the UltraSparc in performance and the 710 can take up to 32GB RAM compared to 8GB on the Sun Fire 250.

Yes the Power5 is much faster than the US3 - that's why Sun has to come out with a USIV based 290 sometime soon.
On the other hand I'm intrigued by your reference to a 710. I know there is supposed to be such a thing - but I couldn't find it. If you "go to" www.ibm.com and click on servers & storage you'll see the reference to the <BR>
"IBM eServer OpenPower servers
Competitively priced, Linux-tuned, IBM 64-bit POWER servers based on a flexible, open architecture"
most of the way down the right side column - but there's no 710 there.
The smallest unit shown is the 1.5Ghz single core(?)9124-720A at about $6K (more than twice the base price for Sun's vague comparable V210)
for the basic box. Not exactly a bargain!
