At this stage, very few people question the power of open source to transform the dynamics of a technology market. Just look at Apache's rapid rise to dominance in Web servers. What's less clear, however, is what's next. Which sectors of the IT industry represent the next wave for open source? Which sectors of the IT industry represent the next wave for open source? Put another way, where are open-source solutions poised to reset the playing field once again -- by offering competitive functionality and greater flexibility at a fraction of the cost?

I work for a services organization that has held this belief for the last 3 years. Originally, we believed that the SMBs would be where we would initially attract attention, however, it has turned out to be, surpisingly, very large enterpises as well as SMBs seeking our professional support and services model. This, we believe, is the result of licensing and software maintenance fees for commercially licensed products being just as demanding on large enterprises where management products are cost centers and not profit centers. We have had increased demand and received more inquiries in the last six months than in the entire history we have supported the project. Of course, our software as well as other open source management products, have greatly matured since the initial releases and the contribution from the community grows daily. Now that our community is growing and more and more open source technologies are available to us, we have the ineritia to add features and stability that is comparable to commercial applications.
