Wikis are finally becoming a useful tool for collaboration and information sharing in the workplace. However, like all business tools exposed on the Internet or corporate intranet, IT managers have to view their deployments with a stern eye regarding who can use them and what corporate information may be at risk. The concept of a wiki, named for the Hawaiian term "wiki-wiki," meaning quick, has been around since the mid-1990s. In its purest form, it's a cleverly designed software application that enhances collaboration.

In our experience, wikis are most successful when they are woven into the overall experience of an online community. If they are stranded as independent entities they can become forgotten and wither.
