Re: IBM's Homeward Bound Linux PC Push

IBM fired the opening salvo at this year's LinuxWorld Conference and Expo, and to the surprise of no one, it was aimed squarely at Microsoft. Sure, it was the low-hanging fruit -- Microsoft's an easy target. It's kind of like taking pot shots at John McCain at an Obama fund-raiser. But here, the ammunition was more notable than the target. IBM's initiative hits at Microsoft -- and proprietary software in general -- on five fronts, from supercomputers to middleware to the average personal computer.

thank god someone as big and rich as IBM is taking steps to push MS out of the monopoly position where I cannot get a computer at any shop that does not force me to accept a buggy, bloated, sometimes useless OS. Do you think I mean Vista? Actually, I go back to windows 3.1
The world needs Linux (or any other open source OS)and will not get it commonly until someone as powerful as IBM is willing to enter the frame. I use Open source material even with windows, and cannot get the bloated MS Office out of my system even if I install Open Office. Why not?

Regarding Compaq´s Linux offerings
Posted by: Runaway1956 2008-08-05 23:34:22 In reply to: Jason Z. Cohen
Compaq doesn´t just offer a computer, to the buyer. They offer that computer, WITH SUPPORT. I know, my wife bought a Compaq, before I educated her better.

Compaq doesn´t HAVE Linux support. Further, Linux online suport and/or telephone support will necessarily be more expensive than Microsoft support. Reason is, there aren´t as many ¨certified¨ people vying for the job of tech support on the Linux side, as there are on the Microsoft side.

I don´t much like Compaq, so I hate to make excuses for them - but in the long run, selling a Linux box is likely to be more expensive for them, than to sell the familiar Microsoft box.
