Re: Linux Netbooks: What's on the Menu?

I recently carried out a personal quest for a netbook computer. Relying on a bit of insider snobbery since I write about computer technology almost daily, I was not expecting a big problem in making a selection. It's not that I really needed another computer. My home office is well-stocked with two desktops running Windows XP and a third former Windows box now running Ubuntu Linux. My HP Pavilion laptop with
Windows XP and its very large wide-screen display serves me well as a desktop replacement and a mobile office with all the bells and whistles.

Some extra options for the Asus EEEs

Mr Germain,

I recently ran across your post after browsing from Raidens Realm. I have been using a Asus EEE 701 for about a year now, and I'm completely happy with it. I agree with you, when you said that all netbooks are pretty much the same except for storage and ram. I would even add that you shouldn't pay attention to the operating systems with them. In all cases, the version of Linux they ship with are...somewhat limited. While full featured, they are often hard to modify in any significant fashion. I would suggest you get whatever hardware you are interested in, and just either live with the build in os, or replace with a full install of Ubuntu or your distro of choice.

For me, my 701 will only be replaced by one of the following options:

Asus EEE 900 from target ($299)
http://www.target.com/ASUS-8-9-Netbook-Computer-Linux/dp/B001E1OQL8/sr=1-11/qid=1231274442/ref=sr_1_11/191-4904663-4524253?ie=UTF8&index=target&rh=k%3Aeee&page=1
Celeron 900 processor
512MB ram
4GB SSD

Asus EEE 900HA from Amazon.com ($324)
http://www.amazon.com/900HA-8-9-Inch-Netbook-Intel-Processor/dp/B001GIPSAM/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1231274584&sr=8-1
Atom 1.6ghz processor
1GB ram
160 HDD

I will add that in my personal experience, 3GB is plenty of space for all my executables leaving 1GB for media\document storage. I have a few SD cards with emulator roms, music and movies that I swap around and I don't feel stressed for space at all. The flash memory is far superior than that in flash cards or USB sticks, and has thus far been without any fault at all. However, I don't have a internet connection at my home, and I was thinking of mirroring both the Debian repositories and the Wikipedia database on my netbook for home use, which would require about 100GB of space. For this reason alone I will be thinking about getting the 900HA.

Needless, The Asus is a top flight machine, with many cheaper options that those you have listed.

Netbook keyboards: Acer Aspire One

Even though I don't have small delicate girly hands* I find the Acer Aspire One =very= easy to touch type on.

That was one of my netbook deal breakers - I wanted Linux and I wanted a keyboard that I could type comfortably on. And the AA1 has that.
