In our age of instant gratification, no one likes waiting for anything. That's why the sluggish launch time of a typical personal computer can make a consumer irritable. It's also why instant-on computing has become a sort of Holy Grail for hardware and software makers in the industry. The pursuit of instant-on is a quest that's given Linux traction in an arena that for years it has found a tough nut to crack -- the PC. "There's no question that this is something that people want, particularly as they get to mobile devices," said Directions on Microsoft's Michael Cherry.
Well i've made XP Embedded (HORM)several years ago and the boot time from pc switch on to Desktop is just 5 seconds.

I have been interested in introducing users of that other OS to GNU/Linux for years. I usually use thin clients made from the existing PCs. These machines load a couple of megabytes from the server to boot and some of them boot in as little as 17s. The first time I did that it was on old PCs that were running '98. Students used to tip their chairs back while waiting and when the login flashed on the screen one fellow was so surprised he forgot about his tipped chair. So, please WARN users of that other OS that their systems will be faster to avoid being bowled over or getting whiplash injuries.
