In a recent survey of its customers running Microsoft's Windows operating systems, Devil Mountain Software found that roughly one-third of enterprises that purchased a New PC with Windows Vista pre-installed downgraded to Windows XP. Major businesses have not deployed Microsoft's latest OS due to compatibility issues and its reputation as a resource hog, according to Craig Barth, chief technology officer at Devil Mountain. "What we're seeing is a trend that organizations are either bypassing Vista, delaying adoption, or debating whether to stick with Windows XP," he said.

In my little shop, most customers are coming in with the notion that they do not want vista at all. We are selling more systems with vista business and XP downgrade *cough* media than any home version of vista.
Microsofts claims and boasts about how many copies of vista they are selling is total baloney. If retailers had 2 identical machines, one with vista, the other with XP, the XP models would move out the door faster than the vista models. The problem with this theory is that Microsoft have stopped shipping XP Pro, leaving XP home as the only option for "low end machines" and no self respecting OEM targeting the corporate customer would in its right mind offer XP home, where the license limits the use to what are essentially home networks.
While the stats related to vista sales may be relatively accurate, the adoption of the vista os is off by a phenominal margin, one that would spell death to any other company, or at least hefty lawyers bills when taken to account for their misleading advertising.
From what I have seen, vista has been the biggest and most effective advertisement for the adoption of non-microsoft systems that has ever been produced. Mac has seen a jump in sales and PC manufacturers have started to offer linux for the desktop. Govt departments and corporate giants have started rolling out procedures for the permission to use and the option to adopt open source file types, meaning the adoption of alternative programs such as OpenOffice.org for corporate use is coming to a city near you, and it will be in your kids future, like it or not. I predict the future of computing will be a vastly different place for our children, where the redmond giant may still have a stronghold, but the other players will have a much greater market share.
As for Windows 7, forget about blasting your customers with adopt vista, then you'll be able to upgrade, what a load of baloney. IT dept heads and techs are smarter than microsoft give them credit for, and if they want to hold off, then blasting them will only alienate a good number of them, further driving away sales and forcing them to think about alternatives.
Thank you Microsoft for liberating us from the oppression of your over-bloated and insecure systems by trying to do too much and building in too many useless and time wasting limitations. You lost me as a customer, and I am actively promoting the alternatives through my shop.
