Re: How to Build a Small-Business Web Site, Part 1: Nuts and Bolts
Posted by: Denise J. Deveau 2008-12-04 19:53:51
See Full Story

When it comes to setting up your Web presence, entrepreneurs are surprisingly lax. Depending on who you talk to, about half of small businesses do not have a Web site. Most of those will tell you that it's just too complicated, time-consuming and expensive a job to take on. With the availability of free and very low-cost drag and drop Web building tools, however, entrepreneurs have no more excuses for being off-screen. It's getting harder than ever for all those entrepreneurial types out there to stay ahead of the game.

A Web Site is MUST for Small Businesses

I think a web site is often just part of the cost of doing business.

If built and maintained correctly it can also be an amazing income channel. I am not talking about getting thousands of hits from people all over the country.

I'm talking about your existing clients (would you like them to visit more often and spend more?) plus new local clients.

Now of course this is based on the assumption you know what the purpose of your site is (depends a LOT on the type of business) and have the skill to build it - but it can be profitable.

If you just want the classic brochure site - then go right ahead and build it yourself but in all honesty I cannot say I have seen one that actually drives income for the business...

Scope of series coverage

This was a good first article. I don't know how long the planned series will be, or the depth of coverage, but I look forward to the next installment.
One area of great interest to small to medium businesses is the real cost of running a website. This is a topic that receives surprisingly little serious coverage. A google search for website running costs finds little of practical value. There is a huge amount written about starting a business website. There is almost nothing written about the variable costs of ownership and operation such as staffing costs for a commercial site, host/ISP annual costs and (importantly) how these charges scale upwards as traffic, bandwidth needs and site complexity increase. Coverage of these real running costs would be of real help to web startups. Just how do hosting charges scale as a site grows?
If you know of any resources which discuss this issue, I would appreciate a link.

Customer retention...

At this time, new customers are often a pipe dream. We all know that enough of us drank the fiscal Koop-aid of late...
Using a website to retain and support the business we already have is the safest and wisest use of often scarce resources.
Such a tactic is useful in getting new business through Referals!
Focus on keeping what we've got.
