Re: Avatars in Tuxes: Second Life Hosts Inaugural Ball

In an almost surreal scene, unprecedented numbers of euphoric people are mobbing America's capital city to celebrate a new hope for a beleaguered nation. It is a celebration so huge that the bounds of reality cannot hold it in. For the very first time, the inauguration of a new president will be trumpeted in this world and another; in life and in Second Life. Of course, there are those who would dismiss Second Life's Inaugural Ball as a mere novelty.

Great to see a positive story about Second Life

Fascinating piece, and great to see something positive about Second Life when it's become fashionable to put it down - just like they used to do the same with the Web in the early days. SL, too, has had the "gee whiz", "great for business", "a waste of time for business", and "it's all porn anyway" stages that dogged the Web a generation ago.

I think what we are seeing here is the beginning of something just as important as the Web, and something that in 5 years we will look back on and wonder how we worked with anything so crude.

One of the big issues President Obama has to tackle is climate change, and right here is an example of how people all over the world can meet with minimal carbon emissions (certainly an enormous amount less than flying to a conference, for example). And the educational possibilities are endless for distance learning and much more - that's why so many libraries and educational establishments are vibrantly alive in-world.

It's hardly a surprise that the events like this are coming to the fore and I believe it is the shape of things to come.
