Qualcomm Chief Executive Paul Jacobs generally has the latest and greatest cell phones. But he's never owned the uber-trendy Apple iPhone. "Not until they put a Qualcomm chip in it," Jacobs said in a September interview. It could soon be time for Jacobs' first Apple phone. The company is widely rumored to be planning an iPhone nano, a smaller touchscreen version of its popular phone. One industry analyst says it will run on Qualcomm chips. Freescale Semiconductor has launched a new low-cost processor, the i.MX515, that's designed to power what Freescale hopes will be new lines of Linux-based netbooks retailing for less than $200. Advanced Micro Devices said Monday that it cut 600 jobs in the third quarter -- 100 more than it indicated in the guidance provided to Wall Street early last fall, according to a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission. The 100 extra job cuts resulted in $70 million in restructuring costs, rather than the $50 million the struggling chip company said it would take when the cuts were first announced. [More...]

Acer unveiled its latest notebook PC Tuesday -- the Aspire 8930G-7665, featuring Intel's new powerhouse mobile chip. The chip, the Core 2 Quad Mobile Processor Q9000, makes Acer's new laptop one of the first notebooks to offer users four processing cores. The Core 2 Quad processor offers 6 MB of shard L2 cache, 4 GB DDR3 1066 MHz Dual Channel Memory and clock speed rates up to 2.0 GHz. [More...]

The Justice Department has sued Microsemi to force the chipmaker to unravel its $25 million acquisition of Semicoa, a deal the government believes is driving prices up and quality down for semiconductors used by the Defense Department and NASA. The antitrust lawsuit claims that Microsemi created a monopoly on parts called "small signal transistors." [More...]

The technology industry was rocked by more dismal news Tuesday with a Gartner report predicting sales of semiconductors will drop by 16.3 percent to $219.2 billion in 2009 due to the recession and lower consumer spending. The decline in chip sales in 2009 will mark the first time the sector has seen back-to-back years of declines. [More...]

German semiconductor maker Infineon Technologies said Wednesday that a write-down on its stake in Qimonda and lower chip prices on the global market combined to widen its fourth-quarter loss, the seventh in a row. Infineon said it lost $968.8 million in the fourth quarter that ended Sept. 30 compared with a $354.5 million loss a year earlier. [More...]

Samsung Electronics was hit with two separate sets of lawsuits as Eastman Kodak and Spansion both accused it of infringing on their patented technology. Spansion accused Samsung of infringing its technology for flash memory, which allows a device to retain data even when its power is turned off. [More...]
