Picture yet another Windows vs. Mac ad, with the dweeby PC guy and the ultracool Mac dude engaging in their usual schtick. Now picture a Jimmy Carter-esque peacemaker parachuting into the shot, getting the two to shake hands, and you'll understand the rationale behind HP's new class of MediaSmart home servers. HP is touting the Windows and Mac compatibility aspects of its EX485 and EX487 models, scheduled to debut in January; Apple Time Machine automatic data backup can now be set directly from the server. Most home networks are cobbled together without a lot of forethought about which devices are used to create it. For most, the decision is basically to use whatever their service provider shipped in a cardboard box. Whether they're going for wireless or wired, homeowners often haven't thought through their options. [More...]

Way back in 1950, science fiction giant Ray Bradbury wrote a short story, "There Will Come Soft Rains," about a smart house that did just about everything for its resident family -- including cooking breakfast and keeping track of the bills. Unfortunately, all members of that family, along with all inhabitants of the town, were obliterated by a nuclear explosion. The house, though, kept right on going. [More...]

It's been a wild ride this week in the Apple-focused blogging world, thanks to Apple's bombshell statement that CEO Steve Jobs would not be giving his usual wildly anticipated keynote address at Macworld in January. In addition, after 2009's show, Apple itself will make no more appearances. All Apple did was put out a dinky little press release, and boom, the blog traffic erupted in a hot rain of speculation. Apple is having a rough week. On Sunday, Goldman Sachs downgraded its stock to "neutral" from "buy," citing a poor selling environment. In fact, Apple's desktop sales dropped 38 percent in November, according to research firm NPD Group. Non-Apple desktop sales dropped just 15 percent, it said. [More...]

A Florida-based company that makes Mac clones has upped the ante in its ongoing copyright litigation against Apple. In its latest claim in U.S. District Court in San Francisco, Psystar claims that Apple has injected code into a version of its Mac OS X software that makes it impossible for unauthorized third-party computers to run the operating system. The economic pressure continues to increase and there is a reasonably good chance that we'll be down to one large car company in the U.S. by this time next year -- Ford, which appears to be the only one that isn't saying it won't survive without a massive cash infusion from the U.S. government. In the PC space, there are three companies being watched closely: Apple and Dell in the U.S. and Lenovo in China. [More...]

The silver Macbook spins slowly in front of an all-white background, as it has in previous Apple television commercials. But this ad's overall spin is different -- instead of talking up digital media, faster processors and more memory, this one mentions toxic chemicals, recyclable aluminum and glass, and energy efficiency. [More...]

There are a lot of interesting nuggets in the Apple-focused blogosphere this week, but a few in particular rise to the top. First, there's the rumor that Apple might make its MacBook Air even lighter with carbon fiber. Then you have the ongoing tug-o-war between Apple and IBM over chip genius Mark Papermaster. [More...]

The Apple-focused blogosphere has been filled with lots of action this week, but few items of note drew on Apple's new launches this fall -- like new iPods and MacBooks. Indeed, the news this week has been about a multitude of smaller items, like Apple's Tony Fadell, the "grandfather of the iPod," stepping down. Meanwhile, news over Apple and IBM's tug-o-war with Mark Papermaster, a top IBM chip designer, continues. [More...]

With the transition to Intel complete, Apple has a new goal: Create next-generation Macs that are so fast, they outright embarrass PCs running Windows. That will create a market differentiation that will poise Apple for its next assault on Microsoft. Steve Jobs loves fast computers. [More...]
