Most home networks are cobbled together without a lot of forethought about which devices are used to create it. For most, the decision is basically to use whatever their service provider shipped in a cardboard box. Whether they're going for wireless or wired, homeowners often haven't thought through their options. For Mac-using homes, however, the options for a home network are pretty easy, though not exactly always straightforward. So what if someone wanted to build an all-Apple home wireless network from the ground up? [More...]

Way back in 1950, science fiction giant Ray Bradbury wrote a short story, "There Will Come Soft Rains," about a smart house that did just about everything for its resident family -- including cooking breakfast and keeping track of the bills. Unfortunately, all members of that family, along with all inhabitants of the town, were obliterated by a nuclear explosion. The house, though, kept right on going. [More...]

It's been a wild ride this week in the Apple-focused blogging world, thanks to Apple's bombshell statement that CEO Steve Jobs would not be giving his usual wildly anticipated keynote address at Macworld in January. In addition, after 2009's show, Apple itself will make no more appearances. All Apple did was put out a dinky little press release, and boom, the blog traffic erupted in a hot rain of speculation. [More...]

Apple is having a rough week. On Sunday, Goldman Sachs downgraded its stock to "neutral" from "buy," citing a poor selling environment. In fact, Apple's desktop sales dropped 38 percent in November, according to research firm NPD Group. Non-Apple desktop sales dropped just 15 percent, it said. [More...]

A Florida-based company that makes Mac clones has upped the ante in its ongoing copyright litigation against Apple. In its latest claim in U.S. District Court in San Francisco, Psystar claims that Apple has injected code into a version of its Mac OS X software that makes it impossible for unauthorized third-party computers to run the operating system. [More...]

The Apple-focused blogosphere has been filled with lots of action this week, but few items of note drew on Apple's new launches this fall -- like new iPods and MacBooks. Indeed, the news this week has been about a multitude of smaller items, like Apple's Tony Fadell, the "grandfather of the iPod," stepping down. Meanwhile, news over Apple and IBM's tug-o-war with Mark Papermaster, a top IBM chip designer, continues. [More...]

With the transition to Intel complete, Apple has a new goal: Create next-generation Macs that are so fast, they outright embarrass PCs running Windows. That will create a market differentiation that will poise Apple for its next assault on Microsoft. Steve Jobs loves fast computers. [More...]

Apple's littlest and most affordable Mac, the Mac mini, appears to be the forgotten stepchild of Cuptertino's computer lineup. Apple hasn't given the Mac mini a decent update since August of 2007, though the diminutive box has so far survived despite a handful of rumors regarding its future -- or lack thereof. [More...]

I've recently returned from a trip to Japan. Compared to my home state of California, Japan is 16 hours ahead. This means, for example, when it is Wednesday morning in Tokyo, it is still Tuesday afternoon or early evening in San Francisco. As I explained to my friends, Japan lives in the future. While in Japan, I knew what the next day was going to be like, well before my friends back home! [More...]

This week, Apple-focused bloggers learned the company has overtaken Research In Motion with smartphone sales for the quarter, and that Apple isn't ready to jump into the netbook scene just now -- or talk publicly about any specific plans, at any rate. Meanwhile, rumors persist of a secret Apple device -- and oh yes, the Mac mini is not dead yet. [More...]

On Tuesday, Apple will hold a snazzy press conference to unveil its latest line of MacBooks and MacBook Pros, with the slim possibility of some sort of new notebook model. The notebook market has indubitably taken off as consumers replace desktops with increasingly powerful portables that can fold in half. But what gives with Apple's other small computer, the Mac mini?
