Sun Charts 4th Profitable Quarter, Sets Sights on Growth November 06, 2007
Sun Microsystems announced modest increases in revenue and profit for its first quarter of 2008 and said continuing the growth remains its "top priority" for the rest of the year. The company, now in its 25th year, reported first-quarter net income of $89 million, which equates to 3 cents per share. During the first quarter a year ago, Sun suffered a net loss of $56 million.

Red Hat Sees Plenty of Black Ink in Q2 September 26, 2007
Open source software provider Red Hat reported strong revenue growth for its second fiscal quarter and announced there are now more than 3,000 applications certified to run on its Enterprise Linux operating system. The company saw $127.3 million in revenue for the quarter, an increase of 28 percent compared with the same quarter last year and 7 percent more than the prior quarter.

SCO Shares Plummet to 40 Cents on Courtroom Loss to Novell August 14, 2007
After four and a half years, the long, torturous and often twisted legal battle between SCO and Novell came to an end Friday when a federal district court judge put the kibosh on SCO's claims that it owned copyrights to the Unix code and operating system, upon which some of the code in Linux is based. SCO's stock dropped more than 70 percent in the days following the ruling.

Intel Takes Stake in VMware as IPO Looms July 10, 2007
Chipmaker Intel has acquired a minor ownership stake in EMC's VMware software unit, a move that comes as the storage company readies its fast-growing server virtualization subsidiary for an initial public offering. Intel Capital, the company's venture investment arm, backed VMware with $218.5 million, the companies said late Monday.

VMware has filed paperwork with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission for its planned initial public offering. The firm will offer 10 percent of its Class A common stock in the IPO, which will give shareholders of EMC, VMware's parent company, a boost and help VMware attract and retain the software industry's top talent, the company said.

EMC to Spin Off Part of VMware as IPO February 08, 2007
Information infrastructure giant EMC is selling, through an initial public offering, a sliver of its highly successful VMware subsidiary, a move that should strengthen VMware's position in the growing virtualization software market. EMC said it will retain ownership of about 90 percent of VMware and stressed it "has no intention of spinning out or otherwise divesting this ownership interest."

IBM Stock Drops Despite Higher Profits January 19, 2007
IBM posted sharply higher profits for its fourth quarter as software and services paced the technology giant, but some weakness in hardware sales led investors to sell off Big Blue shares. IBM said Friday that its net income during the period was $3.54 billion, or $2.31 per share, up 11 percent from the same time frame in 2005. Revenue was up 7.5 percent to $26.3 billion, beating most analyst estimates.
