Safe Mac Computing on an Unsafe Web

We first saw the Apple Macintosh at the 1984 Super Bowl. At the time, IBM and Microsoft gave us only text-based computing. The Mac appeared looking like nothing we had ever seen. Its screen was all graphics, all the time. It had a mouse, the first one seen by most people. It was smaller than a PC, lighter and more portable.

Intel and AMD have finally put a long and bitter disagreement to bed, and in the end, all it took was a little open communication and understanding, along with one and a quarter billion dollars. The two have been at it for years -- accusations, threats, lawsuits. AMD said Intel engaged in anticompetitive behavior; Intel said AMD broke its licensing agreements.

New Worm Gives Jailbroken iPhones the Ol' Rickroll

Although it apparently causes no actual harm besides a trivial annoyance, a worm that hits jailbroken iPhones has security researches worried. The so-called Ikee worm was discovered by security researchers recently. It installs a picture of pop singer Rick Astley and displays the message "Ikee is never going to give you up" on victims' iPhones.
Snow Leopard to Prowl for Mac Malware?

Apple has reportedly included antimalware technologies in Snow Leopard, which will go on sale Friday. The news comes shortly after Apple released a fresh round of commercials indicating that the Mac, unlike PCs running Windows, is virus-free. Mac security software vendor Intego's blog carried a screenshot showing the antimalware feature detecting a version of the RSPlug Trojan horse in a downloaded disk image.

Is iPhone Finally Ready to Clinch the China Deal?

Once again, rumors that Apple has cracked the China market for the iPhone have set the news media buzzing. However, the talk apparently did little for Apple's share prices Tuesday. If true, though, those rumors mean Apple is set to grow like gangbusters. Meanwhile, Cupertino has locked up chip supplies and is launching attacks on other fronts.

Apple aficionados turned their attention this week back to a rumored Apple iPod touch-like tablet device. Chatter about such a gadget has risen and fallen several times over the past few months, so what put it back on the front burner? It seems a recent Piper Jaffray report suggests Apple is working with suppliers to deliver such a large-screen touch tablet sometime in the first half of 2010.

It's been a relatively quiet week for the Apple-focused blogosphere. Apple did announce the dates for its Worldwide Developers Conference, which is set for June 8-12 in San Francisco. WWDC just so happens to the be the venue in which Apple is widely expected to release its next version of Mac OS X -- "Snow Leopard" -- which may be prettier than expected.

Apple Gives Leopard a Good Brushing

Apple has completed a major security overhaul of its Leopard operating system. The fix addresses more than 40 crucial security flaws, including one in iCal that allows hackers to attack the computer remotely. Plugging the iCal hole was the most immediate need Apple had to address.
