Mobile Developers Get to Tinker With Google's Android

After months of speculation and rumors about its mobile plans, Google and a raft of supporting companies gathered Monday to announce Android, a new platform billed as the first truly open and comprehensive application for mobile devices. The platform is the result of a collaboration including T-Mobile, HTC, Qualcomm, Motorola and others through the Open Handset Alliance.
Uruguay Pays Nearly Double for So-Called $100 Laptops

Uruguay recently became the first country to order the One Laptop Per Child Foundation's so-called $100 Laptops, devices designed for children in developing nations. The only problem? The laptops, 100,000 of which were reportedly ordered by the nation, cost just about twice as much as the foundation originally thought they would.

In the next two weeks, Google will reportedly announce its wireless plans. Google will unveil advanced software and services that enable cell phone makers to release "Google-powered" devices sometime in the first half of next year, according to a report that cited people familiar with the situation.
Second Life Sex Toys Spat Spurs Real-Life Lawsuit

Second Life may be a virtual world, but six entrepreneurs operating there have filed a real-life lawsuit against Second Life users who allegedly copied their products. The suit was filed last week in Brooklyn federal court against New York resident Thomas Simon, who reportedly goes by the name "Rase Kenzo" in Second Life, as well as 10 other as-yet-unnamed defendants.

Mozilla's Prism to Pull Web Apps Off the Browser

Mozilla Labs has begun an endeavor with the ultimate goal of creating an environment for PC users in which Web applications function on the desktop the same way and with the same ease of use as desktop applications. The first application to come from the project is Prism, software that will allow users to run Web apps directly from the desktop -- no browser needed.

Mozilla is constantly being asked about its plans for a mobile browser, Mozilla engineering vice president Mike Schroepfer said on his blog.

Media Player Exploits: New Vectors, New Threats

Two separate exploits involving the Apple QuickTime and the Microsoft Windows Media players could continue to plague computer users regardless of which Web browser is installed as the default on a computer system. So far, the only browser developer to announce a patch for this vulnerability is Mozilla, which posted a patch to its open source Firefox Web browser last week.
Mozilla Sends Thunderbird on Solo Flight

The Mozilla Foundation is spinning off its open source e-mail client, Thunderbird, into an independent company. The new company, MailCo, plans to develop Internet communications software "based on the Thunderbird product, code and brand," Mozilla said. David Ascher, CTO of ActiveState, will lead the new mail-focused company.
