The Curious Case of LightSquared vs. GPS February 10, 2012
Another government venue, another condemnation of LightSquared's planned 4G LTE network. U.S. Department of Transportation Deputy Secretary John Porcari told a congressional hearing on Wednesday that if LightSquared were to be deployed, the Federal Aviation Administration would have to constantly monitor some 40,000 broadcasting sites to make sure they did not affect air safety.

Sprint Nextel delivered its Q4 and full year 2011 financial results on Wednesday. The third-largest wireless carrier reported an adjusted OIBDA of $842 million for the fourth quarter and nearly $5.1 billion for the full year 2011. The company's stock price fell after it posted an overall fourth-quarter loss.

Motorola Mobility has filed yet another lawsuit accusing Apple of infringing several of its patents for wireless antennae, software, data filtering and messaging technologies. The suit, filed in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Florida this week, follows a similar lawsuit Motorola filed in another Florida court, alleging the same patent violations.

AT&T Tumbles Into a Ditch January 26, 2012
The chickens came home to roost on Thursday when AT&T took a $4 billion charge for the failure of its attempt to acquire T-Mobile. While AT&T's $32.5 billion in revenue beat estimates, and while the company reported 7.6 million iPhone activations -- thanks to the iPhone 4S -- it nevertheless suffered a fourth-quarter net loss of $6.68 billion, or $1.12 per share.

AT&T Nudges Up Wireless Data Pricing January 19, 2012
AT&T announced new wireless data pricing Wednesday that will give customers more data per month, but at a higher price. The telecom's lowest tier for wireless data use, previously $15 for 200 megabytes of data, will jump to 300 megabytes for $20. The 2 GB plan for $25 will now be $30 for 3 GB, and its highest tier, which also includes mobile hotspot capabilities, will be $50 for 5 GB.

LightSquared Cries Foul over GPS Testing January 19, 2012
Tests conducted by the U.S. Air Force Space Command found that LightSquared's 4G wireless service does indeed interfere with GPS devices, as some critics have claimed.
However, the company's executives have refused to accept the test results, calling them bogus. It has asked the National Telecommunications and Information Administration to re-evaluate this round of testing.

Apple Nips at Android's Tail January 18, 2012
Apple came close to matching Android's smartphone market share during the fourth quarter of 2011, according to a Nielsen report released Wednesday. The debut of Apple's iPhone 4S in the fall had a major impact on the proportion of smartphones sold in the quarter. Demand for iPhones increased nearly 20 percent in December compared to three months earlier, Nielsen found.

News has emerged of a vulnerability in the way RIM's Playbook connects to corporate emails. Essentially, the flaw allows hackers to tap into the Bluetooth connection that links the PlayBook and the BlackBerry smartphone while they are in a Bridge session, which is currently the only way that a user can access his or her emails.

Intel to Make Mobile Incursion via China January 11, 2012
Intel has finally leaped into the mobile sector. CEO Paul Otellini announced the company's entry during a keynote address at CES. Otellini revealed major agreements with both Motorola and Lenovo to put Intel inside smartphones. Intel will show up in Lenovo phones in China during the first half of 2012 and in Motorola handsets this year.

Samsung Soars, HTC Sinks January 06, 2012
Samsung has sailed to record quarterly profits -- despite difficulties with its memory sales -- as the company's top-of-the-line smartphones smacked Apple and crushed HTC. Meanwhile, HTC's earnings slipped in the face of strong competition. Samsung on Friday reported strong profit for its fourth quarter -- $4.5 billion -- beating analyst expectations by roughly 10 percent.
