Stock Watch: Excite@Home Rises on Sony Deal

Excite@Home (Nasdaq: ATHM) was up 5/16 at 15 in early trading Monday, after the broadband Internet provider announced a distribution agreement with Sony Electronics, Inc.

Beginning this fall, Sony VAIO personal computers will come equipped with a pre-loaded demonstration of the @Home service, making the Redwood City, California-based company the first cable broadband service provider on the Sony desktop. Customers with dial-up connections will be able to link to the @Home site to learn about service options and installation. The PCs will also come with pre-installed network interface cards providing quick installation of @Home cable modems.

"This agreement streamlines the set-up of the @Home service and simplifies the process of getting broadband to consumers," said Byron Smith, chief marketing officer of Excite@Home. "We think this relationship will undoubtedly help accelerate broadband awareness and usage."
