Software Maker Baynote Launches Open Source Search Site

The Apache Foundation and Doug Cutting, inventor of the open source Nutch search engine, have teamed with Baynote to expand the adoption of open source search. "The goal of Nutch is to provide effective Web site search," said Cutting. "Baynote's open source program will benefit Web developers and system administrators ... who can use one of Baynote's three Nutch-based options for their own sites."

Baynote, a maker of content guidance software for Web-based businesses, on Monday unveiled Baynote.org, a community-based Web site designed to encourage the adoption of business-ready open source search.

Visitors to the site can take advantage of state-of-the-art search for their business Web site, and may choose to either have the software hosted for free, or download it as the Baynote Image and Baynote Distribution packages.

The Baynote.org site will provide free community-based support without any licensing, maintenance, upgrade, or support fees.

Open Source Roots

The Apache Foundation and Doug Cutting, inventor of the open source Nutch search engine, have teamed with Baynote to expand the adoption of open source search.

"The goal of Nutch is to provide effective Web site search," said Cutting. "Baynote's open source program will benefit Web developers and system administrators ... who can use one of Baynote's three Nutch-based options for their own sites."

Options Trio

Baynote.org will offer three options for open source search: a hosted version, an image and a native installation package.

  • Baynote Hosting will enable Web sites to go live with search in minutes, and without any software, hosting, or support costs.
  • Baynote Image will enable visitors to download and begin using open source search with few installation or compatibility concerns, and can be run on numerous platforms. It requires the VMware (NYSE: VMW) player -- available for download at the Baynote.org site -- to run, however.
  • Baynote Distribution will enable visitors to download, install, and customize open source search, giving businesses access to community forums, tutorials, documentation, and example configuration code.
