I presume you checked the download integrity and used something competent such as Etcher to create the USB? I partly agree with the menu observation although it does default to the first entry and this is what boots the USB to a live session. Granted not your standard Calamares but apart from a short wait (seconds) while the locales were configured I never experienced any of the time lags or other issues you have described during a full installation on several machines including a couple of finicky Dells and a usually problematic Compaq Presario. KDE Plasma 5.25 is easily added using Kubuntu's own instruction and for home users wanting a custom distro with and LTS base this is the best I've seen so far. Other commercial distros have gone down this route such as Linuxfx and PC/Open/Systems but none come even close to Tuxedo.
