Compaq Focuses on E-commerce; Plays Catch-Up with Dell

Compaq Computer Corporation (NYSE: CPQ) made its second announcement this week regarding strategic plans to focus on e-commerce, presumably hoping to regain marketshare that has been going quickly and directly to Dell Computers.

Today’s news announced formation of the Compaq.com Business Division that will be responsible for selling Compaq products and services over the Web.

Eckhard Pfeiffer, Compaq’s president and CEO said, “The focus of this new organization is to fully leverage the Internet to not only sell systems and solutions, but also to build stronger relationships with our customers — from personalized Web sites for consumers to highly integrated extranets for global corporations.”

Pfeiffer named Kenny Kurtzman as vice president and general manager of Compaq.com, reporting to Enrico Pesatori, Compaq Senior Vice President, Corporate Marketing.

Kurtzman was most recently vice president and general manager of Compaq’s Small and Medium Business (SMB) Division where he led the recent launch of Compaq’s Prosignia family of products and Internet services.

“Our plan with Compaq.com is to provide customers with the best e-commerce buying experience in the industry and also deliver the most valuable content and services on the Internet,” said Kurtzman.

Early this week, Compaq announced the spin-off of AltaVista as a separate company.
