Staples Signs Exclusive Affiliate Deal with GeoCities

Shares of office-products retailer Staples (Nasdaq: SPLS) and leading personal Web-hosting service Geocities (Nasdaq: GCTY) climbed on Monday after the companies announced a deal that would make Staples the exclusive office-supplies merchant on GeoCities.

Staples closed up 2-7/8 to 31-3/8, and in a great day for the Internet sector, GeoCities added 7-5/8 to 109-5/8.

The agreement will help extend Staples.com’s reach to the small business community, which makes up nearly 60 percent of GeoCities’ 19 million unique visitors each month.

The site’s extensive reach to this group makes it a key location for Staples.com,” said Jeff Levitan, senior vice president of Staples.com.

Staples Joins New Affiliate Program

Staples is a charter member of Geocities’ new Pages that Pay affiliate program, which will allow webmasters who use Geocities as their Web-hosting service to earn commissions by linking to Staples.com.

“GeoCities members are the world’s largest contributors to affiliate programs,” said J.B. Lyon, vice president of marketing for Staples.com. “This is a great way to grow the Staples.com business and be highly visible across the Internet community. And GeoCities has the world’s fifth largest audience reach.”

Staples.com was launched in the Fall of last year and includes more than 6,000 products.

GeoCities Signs Up Other Partners

Barnes & Noble, Egghead.com, Microsoft travel site Expedia, Reel.com and Cyberian Outpost are among the other merchants that have joined the Pages that Pay program.

Affiliate programs are crucial to e-commerce sites, and this makes Geocities latest move a sure winner. The Pages that Pay program makes it much easier for Geocities’ 3.5 million members to add e-commerce to their site, and this can only help the brand awareness of all the companies that have signed up for Pages that Pay.

On Monday, Geocities also announced that Qsound Labs (Nasdaq: QSND), which sells audio software and hardware for industry professionals, has signed up to join the new affilate program.
