Stock Watch: Lycos Voice Venture Fails To Lift Stock

Lycos, Inc. (Nasdaq: LCOS) fell 11 11/16 to 40 Wednesday, amid a broad decline in technology stocks, as the Internet portal company said it will start a voice-recognition service in five key markets.

Customers in the Boston, metropolitan New York, Chicago, San Francisco and Los Angeles local calling areas using the voice-recognition technology will have free access to news, stock quotes, weather and other information over the phone.

Lycos’ announcement of its voice-recognition service follows an announcement made one day earlier by competitor Yahoo! (Nasdaq: YHOO), which said on Tuesday it will offer a service that will allow users to access e-mail, news and other information by phone, as well as make free calls from personal computers to phones.
