Feren OS is a nice alternative to Linux Mint and an easy stepping stone to transition to Linux from Microsoft Windows or macOS. I am a long-time user of Linux Mint, but I am falling out of love with it. Mint is getting stale. It is annoyingly sluggish at times. I run it on a number of computers and experience the same symptoms on a variety of hardware configurations. That started me thinking about a suitable replacement distro that runs the Cinnamon desktop with a bit more innovation and flare.
I agree with a lot of what you said. I have 3 machines, all running Linux Mint Cinnamon 19.1. Seems after a bunch of updates, they started running a little sluggish. I am a firm believer in Linux Mint, no plans to ever not have it as my main system. My Dell is dual booting with Zorin 12.4 Ultimate. I like Zorin, especially the looks. Just seems to lack something, unsure what though. Don't use nearly as much as Mint. Mint to me and for my pc use is the Best. So I decided after a ton of research and reading this article to put Feren on my old Gateway to give it a try. I am more than pleased. I get the best of Mint, plus the looks of Zorin. Only been on it a few days, but Feren may just turn out to be my new primary OS... Mainly because of the Mint base/support. And not have to upgrade/reinstall ever again, that's a huge plus. Time will tell. Thanks for the great article too btw..
I'm not knocking young talent or their contributions to the creative world but as I understand it this distro is managed solely by one school student. I'll stand corrected if the information I was given is wrong but on this basis what possible future can it have long term? We've been down this road so many times before with adopters of various distros being hung out to dry when the developer moves on or loses interest.
I'm not sure how you get Cinnamon looking more modern than say Deepin or Plasma5 and with the panel hidden there's not a lot left on view to compare with.
Love Cinnamon. I agree with what you said about Mint. I've been on Manjaro Cinnamon for six months and lovin' it! Rolling distro, Cinnamon updates are pushed in a few days.
Not only does Cinnamon look more modern than the others, without a lot of work, but there are enough settings and tweaks to keep anyone busy.
I ditched conky for a few desklets and have the panel hidden. Clean desktop and added a few keyboard shortcuts to be sort of like i3 using more workspaces faster.
Lovin' the possibilities! I'll try Feren, but Manjaro is a pretty high bar at the moment.
