Feren OS now is built around Ubuntu Linux 18.04 and the KDE Plasma desktop instead of Linux Mint. The Cinnamon desktop version could retire later this year. The Feren OS community has released a mostly maintenance snapshot update for the Feren OS Cinnamon version. This new Feren OS release meets the goal of mixing the Cinnamon desktop with the more capable KDE Plasma 5 to make a better distro. It comes with a transition tool that literally rolls the updated system components in the snapshot release into the modified KDE desktop.

Firstly, I would like to thank the Feren OS developer for the new Feren OS. I have the Classic of 2018 with updates on my rig (sadly the theme store no longer available so I intend to make sure I have an image of the drive. Now to the new OS. I was in a bit of turmoil being moderator for ZorinOS as my good lady's machine had the expiring Windows 7 on it. It now has FerenOS on it and the sunset beach theme, with sounds is now present on her Feren OS desktop. I went with 'Familiar Layout' (Tiled like the latest from that 'other OS' as Knoppix calls it!). I had to go into 'Advanced' settings to: change OpenGL2 to xrender, turn off all animations and make the look 'smooth' as opposed to 'crisp' to avoid tearing - why? The computer in question has a motherboard dating back to 2006 - 2 Gb DDR2 RAM (maxed out MSI K8T with Athlon 3700+ processor and some time ago had to replace failed nVidia FX5600 256 Mb with an EVGA fanless replacement same memory and also AGP 8x. Feren OS has maintained one a central Ethos to GNU/Linux - "Breathing life into old machines", plus the wonderful inclusion of Timeshift. I was also lucky to get a great offer from SoftMaker Office at the end of last year - 5 Windows and 5 Linux PC licence of SoftMaker Office 2018. Don't get me wrong, LibreOffice is fine for LibreOffice but having spent so much time prior to Linux (and at worrk) SoftMaker Office 'Presentations' renders presentations created in PowerPoint better than Impress can. There has been a known KDE bug came up last week: 'Unable to create io-slave. klauncher said: Error loading '/usr/lib/qt/plugins/kf5/kio/file.so' - but it went away after newest update and re-boot. The only thing I haven't worked out yet (could be missing the tweak needed) is that once you have chosen a colour theme I can't find how to change to a different or original default 'blue' theme. For a sighted user, Feren OS is beautiful, but only Gnome can currently offer the best Accessibility options, in particular the screenreader Orca - only found it works with Zorin's menu - certainly not Cinnamon DE and MATE doesn't work either.
One more indication that Linux Mint is on the decline. Mint is now nothing more than one more version of Ubuntu--Ubuntu Mint.
People are simply tired of Mint coasting on its past; and tired of C. Lefebvre surrounding himself with 'yes-men'; and believing everything HE reads in his 'echo chambers'.
Yet another pointless mix of code that achieves nothing with neither base either looking as good or performing as well as many other Cinnamon or KDE specific alternatives. If folks must have multiple desktops then either Q4OS or especially Endeavour OS are far better options with the former being LTS and the latter a rolling release. The other point being both these distros actually work without freezing up or falling over altogether. This version of Feren OS is just a hotchpotch with such a confusing array of settings even seasoned Linux users will soon tire sorting them out.
